Technology · The 4 synthetic fuel production pathways
How is a synthetic fuel produced?

There are four main technological pathways for producing synthetic fuels. The PtL (Power-to-Liquid) pathway is the most strategic as it depends on no biomass and can be deployed wherever renewable electricity is abundant.

PtL · Power-to-Liquid · eSAF · e-diesel
Green H₂ + CO₂ → Fischer-Tropsch
Renewable electricity splits water by electrolysis → green H₂. Captured CO₂ combined via RWGS → syngas → Fischer-Tropsch → ASTM-certified drop-in fuel. Examples: INERATEC ERA ONE, Infinium Roadrunner, HIF Global, Norsk e-Fuel, Synhelion.
Cost: €5–15/LTarget 2030: €2–5/LCO₂: −85–95%ReFuelEU eSAF ✅
HEFA · Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids
Waste oils + fats → SAF via hydroprocessing
The dominant pathway today. Cooking oils, animal fats, vegetable oils hydroprocessed to produce SAF and renewable diesel. Commercially mature. Limited by feedstock availability. Leaders: Neste, TotalEnergies, bp, HollyFrontier.
Cost: €2–5/LCO₂: −60–80%TRL 9 · commercial
ATJ · Alcohol-to-Jet · LanzaJet process
Ethanol/methanol → SAF
Converts alcohols into SAF and renewable diesel. LanzaJet process (LanzaTech). First commercial plant in Europe: FLITE in Ghent (Belgium), €500M, 79,000 t SAF/yr, confirmed May 2026.
Cost: €3–7/LCO₂: −70–85%TRL 8–9
Solar FT · Synhelion · Concentrated Solar
Solar energy → Fischer-Tropsch direct
Unique pathway by Synhelion (Switzerland). Concentrated solar drives Fischer-Tropsch without electrolysis step. DAWN plant (Germany): world's first industrial solar fuel facility. Ideal for MENA and Spain.
CO₂: −90–100%No electrolyserTRL 8 · 2025
